Percy Fredrick Smith was my great-grandfather. A carpenter’s apprentice from London who volunteered at seventeen, because boys did that then. They were promised glory. They were told it would be over by Christmas. No one understood what modern war was about to become.

Gallipoli. Mesopotamia. Heat. Mud. Flies. Percy was wounded, possibly twice and survived campaigns that swallowed thousands whole.

But survival isn’t the same as escape.

The war followed him home. He never spoke of it. Not about Gallipoli. Not about the desert. Just a single, almost casual remark about a man-to-man blood transfusion.
Tracing Percy is my attempt to break that silence. To find the man behind the medals and understand what happens when the fighting stops, but the war doesn’t.

Because sometimes the loudest part of history… is what no one ever said.
