WW1 History, Family Stories, Forgotten Fronts

History is a passion for me and has been for as long as I can remember, so much so that I became a history and humanities teacher at secondary school level. This love of education and late diagnosed ADHD has led me to my current role teaching in a pupil referral unit helping kids who need different approach.

Outside of school a huge part of my life is that I am a gamer, streamer and content creator. This isn’t just playing games (badly), it is rambling about my ADHD journey, talking about history and painting miniatures.  Oddly enough this has started bleeding into my world as an educator with gaming related extra curricular activities.

The chaotic combination of these two sides of my life in a neurodivergent brain led to a huge personal journey on a passion project; Tracing Percy. This book started as a Grandson deciding on his Nan’s 90th birthday to finish her research of her father’s WWI journey. Escalating first to a YouTube documentary and then after a throwaway comment from my dad, “You should write a book” here we are, self publishing Percy’s story and creating a place to showcase this and more incredible tales from history as I go.

Welcome to Tom Deacon History.

Tracing Percy

One ordinary soldier, in an extraordinary war

Percy Fredrick Smith was my great-grandfather. A carpenter’s apprentice from London who volunteered at seventeen, because boys did that then. They were promised glory. They were told it would be over by Christmas. No one understood what modern war was about to become.

This is his story told by me 110 years later.
